Tips on Choosing a Boudoir Photographer

If you are considering booking a boudoir photoshoot, there are several things that you will want to consider to ensure that you have the best experience possible. Boudoir is meant to give you a boost in confidence and pep in your step. You want to be sure you choose someone who can deliver the results you desire. Boudoir photography is a luxury that doesn’t come cheap, so below are a few things to consider so that you can make an informed decision.

Expert or jack of all trades?

When comparing boudoir photographers, determine whether you want a specialized boudoir photographer or a jack of all trades. In my experience, photographers who spread themselves across all genres rarely have the time to master boudoir photography. Boudoir is a much different animal than portrait photography. First, posing is much different to achieve the desired results than wedding or newborn photography. Also, there are tricks to ensure flattering images every time. This includes extensive lighting knowledge, angles to flatter all body shapes and facial expressions. Not to say those who shoot weddings and newborns can’t be great at boudoir. It’s just something to look at and consider.

Style

Make sure that you’ve viewed and like the photographers style of work. Check out their social media accounts and website.  As you’ve probably noticed, images can go from light and airy to dark and moody and everything in between. If you book a photographer whose portfolio covers a range of styles, be sure to communicate which type of images are most appealing to you. If you’re interested in shooting indoors or outdoors, be sure the photographer shows work that covers locations that you’d like to shoot at. Sometimes, images in portfolios don’t always guarantee that a photographer will have access to that specific location. Be sure to ask if you’re wanting something specific.

Limited Service or Full Service

Limited service photographers typically require little interaction. You may receive a shoot guide with some direction on what you need to do to prepare for your shoot. Photo galleries are usually delivered via website for your digital downloads. They may or may not offer professional hair and makeup, a client closet and artwork. Definitely check to make sure all the bases are covered of what you’re wanting.

Full service photographers require more interaction. They typically do consultations so that the two of you can get to know each other. This makes the day of the shoot a lot more comfortable. It also allows discussion on expectations, wardrobe and hair and makeup. The photographer will often have product samples so that you have the ability to touch and feel the beautiful artwork that is offered. Most full service photographers offer professional hair and makeup and wardrobe choices. They also do in person reveals of the final images. This is done for a couple of reasons. First, to ensure that you are absolutely 100% satisfied with the results. And second, to help you make the really hard decision of narrowing down which images you want for your collection. Full service photographers offer a range of beautiful high quality artwork as well as digital file options.

Editing

When booking a photographer, be sure the editing style is in line with what you’re wanting. Some photographers prefer to do very minimal retouching when it comes to the subject. They may do a little skin smoothing and blemish removal, but others will not. Some photographers refuse to do any kind of body altering, cellulite removal and things of that nature. Some photographers have no problem with it. If you think you may need a little bit more retouching than basic color correction, like if you have a scar or a really bad tattoo you need covered up, be sure to ask the photographer if they’re willing and able to do the edits that you’re wanting.

With all of that being said, just do the damn thing! The hardest part is reaching out to your photographer to get the ball rolling! A great photographer will do all that he or she can to ensure you have an amazing experience.
